Ecuador High Altitude Expedition: Dispatch 5

Ecuador High Altitude Expedition: November 26–Dec 10, 2010

Lead Guide: Pepe Landazuri

Climbers: Diane Evans, Robert Krueger, Timothy Pattee, John Stephenson, Scott Curtis.

Pepe called Wednesday, December 1st at 7:45 am Ecuador (and US Eastern) time with the following update:

Hello, good morning, this is Pepe calling from high on Cayambe. We are enjoying a perfect day up here and a great climb.  Diane, John and the others got to just 90 meters below the summit.  We have just decided to stop here because there is some instability in the snow pack on this short final slope to the summit.  But we are very happy to be here - not precisely the very top but so close we feel like we have definitely climbed this mountain!

The views are tremendous.  Like yesterday afternoon and evening, it is perfectly clear.  We can see lots of the other big peaks  The clarity in the atmosphere is perfect.  We are very excited about the new snow, because this means our next peaks, Cotopaxi and Chimborazo, should be in good shape.  Everyone is excited to do more climbing.

For now, we are looking forward to the sunshine as we go down.  It was a pretty sunrise and now we are warming up.  It was a little cold on the climb up, but everyone had the right gear and didn't have a problem staying warm.  It's great to be here so high, and we are a little reluctant to start down.  So we'll have some snacks and take more photos and eventually head down.  We just wanted to let you know that we are all doing well.  Talk to you soon!"
