Denali Team 3 - Dispatch #9

Angela just called a few minutes ago over a static-laden line. We did our best to give her all of your comments...

Denali Team 3: May 23 - June 12, 2010

Guides: Angela Seidling, Alaina Robertson

Climbers: Paul Rose, Joan Clofent, Paul Watkins, Carol Masheter, Simon Boaz, Bob Sullivan

Lead Guide Angela Seidling called at 1:30pm on Tuesday, June 1st:

It appears that today is a rest day for the people who went and cached above the fixed lines yesterday. The people who rested yesterday plan on going up to the base of the fixed lines in order to continue their acclimatization. Everybody else is just hanging out, eating and resting...

It is currently snowing lightly with a little bit of wind. There has been fresh snow every day for the last three days.

Angela would like to send birthday wishes to her brother Neil.

And when I asked if there were any more messages, Angela said that Simon wanted to say, "Cobra Kai leads the way!"

At this point the sat phone cut out...

Any news on who went up to the cache yesterday and who's going to the acclimatisation hike today? Is there any particular reason why people stayed behind or is that normal?
How are the individuals all coping? Is everything going to schedule and are they making it to camp early, on time or very slowly?

It's not clear who went up to the cache yesterday and who went up to the fixed lines today. It is somewhat unusual to split the team like this and we are not sure why this happened.

The sat phone has a hard time with the amount of weather and clouds that the team is experiencing. So we don't always get all the information.

Next time they call, we will try to find out why the team split and what's going on.

It is likely that this split was a strategic decision in order to give some people an extra day of rest to help them acclimatize.

For Bob,
Thanks for the call. It was GREAT to hear your voice. Maybe my birthday present will be a successful summit for you from the top of North America.
