Denali Team 2: May 8 - 28 Dispatch #3

Denali Team 2:  May 8 - 28, 2011

Guide:  Richard Riquelme and Mary Harlan

Climbers:  Claire Morrissey (London, UK), Stephen Baldock (Washington State), and Johnna Haskel (Maine)

Richard Riquelme called in with a dispatch at 9:30 am on May 11th:

“Hello, outside world! Yesterday we talked from Base Camp to Camp 1. It was a very, very long day – almost 15 hours. We walked through very low temperatures and high winds. When we finally arrived, our fingers were so cold it was hard to set up our camp. In fact, we didn’t even finish – we cooked some dinner around 11pm and went to bed around 11:30. As such, we’re sleeping in right now. Well, I’m not, but everyone else is. I’m cooking some vegetables and getting some water boiling. Today, we’ll finish the camp. We still need to fortify some walls and build a latrine. But, everyone is still healthy and doing fine. The team is very resilient and I’m glad they powered through yesterday. It looks like the weather is going to shape up and we’ll get some sun, and less wind. I will call you tonight for another weather update. Thanks!”
